2008 Steelworkers Joint Health and Safety Conference

I am pleased to announce that the 2008 United Steelworkers’ Health, Safety and Environment Conference will be held August 18-22 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center and Westin Convention Center Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This conference is a combination of the R/PIC Joint Labor Management Health and Safety Symposiums, TOP Conferences and the National Health and Safety School that were previously held. However, the conference is open to all USW local unions.

The conference is specifically for your Health, Safety and Environment Committee chairperson and committee members. This is a joint labor-management health and safety conference. We encourage you to invite management representatives to attend from your workplace. Please provide them with a copy of this letter so that they have the registration information regarding this conference.

Conference registration will be held Sunday, August 17 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. and on Monday, August 18 at 7:00 a.m. The conference will convene at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, August 18 with a union-only session. The joint labor-management sessions will begin on Tuesday, and the conference will adjourn on Friday, August 22 at noon.

There is no limit to the number of delegates a local union can send to this conference nor is attendance restricted in any way. We would hope, however, that locals will seek out members who reflect the diversity of our union, as well as to develop the potential that is seen in members not currently active.

Registration Fees:

To assist in our planning, we ask that everyone register for the conference in advance by going to www.usw.org, selecting the 2008 United Steelworkers’ Health, Safety and Environment Conference icon, and completing the online registration form.

In order to cover the cost of conference materials and a reception Monday evening, a registration fee of $275.00 U.S. or Canadian dollars per participant will be charged. After your local union registers online, please have a check made payable to “USW Secretary-Treasurer” and mail it to: USW, Health, Safety and Environment Department, 5 Gateway Center, Pittsburgh, PA 15222. Please indicate on the subject line of your check the name of the individual(s) registering with that payment and include a copy of the registration form.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Westin Convention Center Hotel, 1000 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222. Participants should make their hotel reservations online when registering for the conference, or by calling (412) 281-3700 and identifying yourself as attending the 2008 Steelworkers’ Health, Safety and Environment Conference. The Westin Convention Center Hotel is a completely “smoke-free” hotel. Smoking is only permitted outside of the hotel.

All reservations must be guaranteed with a credit card, and one night’s deposit is required. Cancellations will be accepted 72 hours prior to the day of your arrival; if a cancellation is not made, the room charge and tax will be billed to the credit card on file. To assist in planning your arrival time, check-in time is 3:00 p.m. The cutoff date for room reservations is July 27, and rooms may not be available after that date, or at the conference rate.

Airline Arrangements:

In cooperation with Gateway Travel Management, special travel arrangements have been made for air transportation to the conference.
